Expresiones idiomáticas:

Hi, I’m Joel from http://www.InglesAvanzado.org. In this lesson, I’m going to talk about the expression “Where were we?”

“Where were we?” (¿Dónde estábamos?) can have two different meanings. The literal meaning would be “Where were we?” in a physical sense: Where were we last night? - ¿Dónde estábamos anoche?

But in this lesson I want to talk about the figurative meaning. So, if you’re having a conversation with somebody and you get interrupted, after the interruption ends, you can say, “Where were we?” to continue your conversation.

So, let’s say that you and I are talking about football, American football. We’re talking about who won the Super Bowl last year. And then, somebody comes and asks us for directions. So, we give directions to the man, and then after, I say, “Where were we?” And then you say, “Oh, we were talking about who won the Super Bowl last year.”

Okay, so that’s how you use “Where were we?” in a figurative sense. After you get interrupted, you can continue your conversation - ¿Dónde estábamos?

Well, I hope that this lesson was useful for you. And don’t forget to go to my website http://www.InglesAvanzado.org for more lessons, my mp3 conversational course for download, and native Spanish speakers – I’m sorry, native English speakers who you can practice your English with and get corrections.

Alright, thanks for watching.
