Errores Comunes en Inglés: Desert o dessert?

Hey, this is Joel from In this lesson, I’m going to talk about the difference between the words “desert” and ‘dessert.”

Desert and dessert: So they’re spelled the same except “dessert’ has an extra s. Okay, so “desert” is “desierto” – It’s a dry, barren area of land and it’s known for having a lot of cactuses.

And the other word, “dessert” with 2 s’s is “postre” – It’s the final course of a meal. It’s usually something sweet, like cake, cookies, pie, ice cream.

Okay, so “dessert” is postre and “desert” - desierto. I hope you can hear the difference in pronunciation.

Okay, now I’m going to give you some example sentences:

“Let’s go to the store and buy some dessert.”

“What are we going to have for dessert tonight?”

And now to use “desert” – desierto:

“I don’t think I’d like to live in the desert.”

“There are a lot of cactuses in the desert.”
